Experience some of the hidden treasures in your own backyard. From Ohio’s best kept secrets to some well-known attractions, these are 10 amazing gems that we don’t want you to miss!  

1) Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve at Kelleys Island  

The Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve located on the northern tip of Kelleys Island is one of the most spectacular sights in the state and one of Ohio’s best kept secrets. This hidden gem consists of 400-foot-long, 10-foot-deep grooves created by a moving glacier thousands of years ago. Visitors can take a walk down the grooves and explore the incredible natural history of this area. 

The Glacial Grooves are a great way to learn about geology and natural history. Visitors can observe how the ice moved, see how the glacier carved out its path, and learn about the unique geological features of the area.  

The Grooves are open to the public, free of charge, so anyone can experience this amazing geological phenomenon.   

2) White Star Quarry, Fremont  

This amazing natural wonder is another ancient glacial lake and home to a variety of unique and colorful species of fish, aquatic plants, and other wildlife. The crystal-clear waters provide a perfect place for swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and fishing.   

The quarry's steep limestone walls are lined with rock formations that are popular among rock climbers and hikers. You'll be mesmerized by the majestic beauty of the waterfalls and the surrounding scenery. You might even spot some bald eagles soaring high above the trees!  

There are picnic tables, grills, and restrooms available at the site.    

3) Dogwood Pass, Beaver  

If you’re looking for a scenic hike that will take your breath away, then look no further than Dogwood Pass in Beaver, Ohio. This hidden gem is the perfect spot for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers alike. The 6-mile loop trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Appalachian foothills – and is a great place to get away from it all and relax.   

Dogwood Pass is a great destination for a day trip or weekend getaway. The trail is suitable for experienced hikers, but also perfect for beginners. Pack a picnic lunch and some drinks and make a day out of it!   

4) Holden Arboretum Canopy Walk, Kirtland  

The Holden Arboretum Canopy Walk in Kirtland is a one-of-a-kind experience that you won't find anywhere else in the state. Located in the heart of the Holden Arboretum, the Canopy Walk is a 500-foot-long elevated walkway that takes visitors up into the canopy of a mature forest. At heights of up to 50 feet off the ground, visitors can get an incredible perspective on the natural beauty of Ohio's forests and wildlife. At the end of the Canopy Walk, visitors will find a panoramic overlook platform with beautiful views of the entire arboretum and surrounding area.

5) Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park, Garrettsville   

Nestled in the northeastern corner of Ohio, Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park is home to spectacular cliffs and sandstone ledges that are sure to take your breath away.  

One of the most iconic features of this park is the sheer 50-foot cliffs that rise above the meandering gorge, creating a dramatic landscape for visitors. The park's numerous trails are perfect for exploring the scenery and discovering hidden waterfalls, caves, and rock formations.   

The park also offers a variety of outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, and hunting. Campers can choose from two campgrounds: one primitive area for tent camping and another for RV camping. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck in the many fishing holes around the park, while hunters can take advantage of the park's regulations during hunting season.  

6) The Schoenbrunn Village, New Philadelphia  

Located in New Philadelphia, Ohio, the Schoenbrunn Village is a historic replica of a Moravian mission village that was established in 1772. This unique attraction provides insight into colonial life and culture in Ohio. The village has been meticulously restored and is now a designated National Historic Landmark, with original buildings and artifacts from the 1700s. Visitors to the Schoenbrunn Village can explore 14 log cabins, a church, and a blockhouse, as well as learn about traditional colonial life in the area.  

7) World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock, Sugarcreek  

If you’re looking for a unique sightseeing experience, head to Sugarcreek, Ohio and visit the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock! This gigantic clock stands at 23 feet tall, and is built to resemble the traditional Black Forest cuckoo clocks found in Germany. The clock is made with real wood, including pine and oak, and it has intricate carvings of animals and birds that move around the clock. Visitors can watch the clockwork movements in action and listen to the melodic chime of the cuckoo each hour.   

The clock is located outside of an old-fashioned general store, which features souvenirs and handmade crafts from local artisans. Whether you’re an avid collector or simply looking for a unique photo op, a visit to the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock is sure to be a memorable experience.  

8) Loveland Castle Museum (Chateau Laroche), Loveland Park  

Nestled in the hills of Loveland you’ll find the Chateau Laroche, otherwise known as the “Castle of Loveland.” Built in 1929, this majestic structure is truly a sight to behold. Its turrets, battlements, and stone walls are reminiscent of a medieval castle, yet it's been furnished with modern amenities like electricity and plumbing.  

The castle is open for visitors to explore. Among the castle's attractions are a dungeon, a tower, an armory, a grand hall, and a chapel. Visitors can also explore the grounds, which include a picnic area, nature trails, and a small zoo.  

For those looking for an adventure, Chateau Laroche also offers an escape room game. Players must work together to solve puzzles and find their way out of the castle within 60 minutes. It’s an exciting way to test your wits and explore the castle at the same time!   

9) The Hocking Hills State Park, Logan  

Located in southeast Ohio, the Hocking Hills State Park is a breathtaking area of untouched natural beauty. The park encompasses a large area of 9,000 acres, which includes sandstone cliffs, gorges, caves, and numerous trails. With its stunning forests and waterfalls, it's no wonder that this park is one of the most popular destinations for travelers from around the world.

10) The Wilds, Cumberland   

Situated in the southeastern region of Ohio, The Wilds is a stunning wildlife preserve that is home to a variety of endangered and threatened species from around the world. This 10,000-acre haven was created in 1994 as a way to provide refuge for rare species and promote conservation.   

At The Wilds, you will find an array of African and North American animal species such as giraffes, bison, rhinos, cheetahs, camels, and zebras. On top of that, The Wilds has a variety of educational programs available that allow visitors to learn more about conservation and the animals living at the preserve.
